So I had a go and mixing up Randys Magnesium from his 2 part instructions but I have a lot of separation. I used a 2 litre bottle and converted a cup size to grams and US gallons to litres. Is this the residue it talks about in his article (please picture)? http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php
Seems like a lot and maybe I have not got the measurements right so could someone advise if this is correct?

Epsom SaltsMagnesium Chloride
742g (3 Cups)1001g (5 Cups)
392g 529g

The bottom row is what I mixed into 2 litres of water using the calculation
1 galllon = 3.78541 litres
Divide 3.78541 by 1.892 = 2 litres
I then divided the top row 742g and 1001g by 1.892 and added 392g of Epsom salts and 529 of Magnesium Chloride to the 2 litres of RO water.

His measurements for the salts are volumetric—if you weighed the salts out on a scale, you’ll be off.

Even if both parts are fully dissolved and clear, there is sometimes substantial calcium contaminant in the magnesium chloride, and when mixed with the magnesium sulfate, can precipitate calcium sulfate.

You can dose that or not. It will dissolve in the aquarium.

Thanks Randy for confirming I can use just the clear liquid or both. Would you expect the amount of separation shown in the first post?

What exact products did you use?
