RD3 150W x 2 ??

Good night all! I'm about to upgrade my return pumps hopefully for the last time, I'm going with two Royal Exclusive Red Dragon RD3 150W pumps, do you think this would be overkill for my 320gal?

One for redundancy, they would be running at 50% or less 90% of the time.

Overkill yes but if you have the money go for it. Or run 2 80 watt full blast. If one fails you still have another running.

Would you have considered 2 L1's overkill?

Going through a sump yes. If one was closed loop then no. If you have a large sump then it wouldn't even be that bad. Its pretty relative to everything combined.

The pumps also feed an algae scrubber, uv reactor, chiller, ozone , de-nitrator and calcium reactors

Both pumps in series running a lead / lag but I am not sure if an aquarium controller will do that yet. I have to sit down and think about that.
I know they have flow sensors out now so if a pump was supposed to lead and there was no flow it could run the lag and alarm you there is an issue.
Do you plan to run internal powerheads of some sort?

I do building automation for hvac and if the controllers we use weren't so expensive I will build myself an it can do anything controller. Lol

For power heads I have four Gyres (2x150 and 2x250) all controlled via their individual ICM . I am also looking into a pair of 1.5" Sea Swirls.

In the process of setting up my 315 gal. Went through the same thought process. I ended up talking to Scott who is the Director Customer Support Royal Exclusiv USA. On the other forum they have a thread for their products. He talked me into going with a single 230W monster.

I considered doing this but I would be down to a single pump which I'm not comfortable with. I would have also had to remove the sump for fitting of the larger 2" bulkheads, a headache I'm never in the mood for.

Lol. Totally know that "not in the mood" feeling. Luckily I'm waiting for my sump to arrive from Advanced Acrylics. Assemble and install. Much easier as a build for sure.

I'm told that they just don't die. I mean its his job to tell me why their stuff is the best, but when you look at materials used you can see that what ever model(s) you choose your getting probably the best pump in the market.

Consider Abyzz as they are now distributed by Coralvue. Very reliable and you could be comfortable running just a single A200.

Those 150s are super sexy. You can't beat the L1s for the cost/value, but the reality is that after you get past accepting that you're gonna pay more, the RE RDs are just the top of the line one EVERY aspect.

Oh PLEASE post a picture of the RE hooked up to your new P4 when it's all set up... at least I can live vicariously through you, as I sit here with my RD3 still in the box and a controllerless tank waiting for life...
