Reading color charts in water testing

When running water tests with color charts does one view the water sample through the side of the sample or through the end of the sample? Viewing through the end of the sample provides a much darker sample to compare with the color chart.

I think it depends on the test kit itself. They should show how to view in the instructions. I use Hanna checkers & red Sea mostly & the red sea looks into the contaiiner

Yes I have a Red Sea NH3/NH4 kit and the container is about as wide as it is deep. My other tests are using taller narrow tubs and directions just say to compare colors. I have had my eye open for used Hanna testers but haven’t seen any recently.
