My tank is using a skimmer designed based on the Lifereef model, with a 15cm diameter and 40cm height.

To be honest, its efficiency is almost ridiculous. Combined with my existing filtration system, NP levels always stay below 0.5-0.1, even during periods when I experimented with completely removing mechanical filtration.

Here is the state of my sump after two months without mechanical filtration.

Here’s my old skimmer.

Due to several limitations (mainly aesthetic concerns), I decided to redesign my skimmer.

Starting with the design:
  • A 3D-printed vortex water pump to increase contact time.
  • A stepped structure to create a vortex while preventing air from escaping into the outlet.
  • A smooth reaction chamber with all pipes placed externally.

Practical limitation: Only one
  • Foam escapes if the screws are not tightened properly.
Solution:
  • Replace the screw mechanism with a locking clip.
  • Add an inner ridge to block foam from escaping through the connection groove.

But I'm too lazy to redo it :)

Actual Cost:
  • 3D printing: 1.57$
  • Reaction chamber: A plastic flower vase (3.92$) with a 12cm wide opening, 11cm base, and 30cm height—perfect size.
  • Venturi: 1.18$ (knockoff)
  • Drain valve: 3.92$ (China)
  • Pipes, glue, etc.: 3.92$
Total: 14.5$

Performance: Nothing to complain about, except it's a bit noisy. The collection cup is made of soft plastic, which vibrates and creates noise.

(Once again, too lazy to redo it )

I continue to make improvements. The previous version was still too large for my tank.
  • I will reduce the size of the reaction chamber (from 110mm to 100mm)
  • I will reposition the venturi horizontally to improve the air-mixing efficiency
  • I will redesign the air intake head to make it easier to disassemble and clean
