Hi all,

Looking for some advice please. I have a Red Sea Reefer Max E 260, which I bought around 18 months ago with the intention of going along the saltwater theme. Health problems prohibited me from doing this at the time, so put the tank in storage.

I've now removed the tank from storage and have since decided to go along the freshwater route, as a complete beginner I felt this would better suit me at this time.

My question is, can I repurpose the Red Sea for freshwater and what do you feel I would need to do in terms of alterations?

I read info on not needing the protein skimmer, but the Max E has a pump that attaches to the skimmer, so if the skimmer was removed the pump would need to be removed also.

I have searched Google and not a great deal of info comes up.

Just wondering if anyone had any experience of doing this.

Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Reef 2 Reef.
Many people switch back and forth between freshwater and saltwater tanks. It is not a problem to use this tank for freshwater. You are correct that a skimmer is not used so you can take that and the skimmer pump out, but everything else will be fine for freshwater application.

Many thanks for replying and acknowledging that the tank would be ok and for welcoming me to Reef2Reef. I know I need to change the media in the rear sump and replace with appropriate media for freshwater.

Would you know if just replacing the media alone would be enough to filter the water along with the 2 remaining pumps, or would I need additional filtration?

Many thanks
