I have a ballast going bad on my RSM250. Red sea part #40320.
I can find them available, but $50+ each sounds pretty steep... Is there something special about them? Or will another 2x39w ballast work?

Most of the time its just a proprietary wiring harness from the fixture that clips onto the ballast. Most other commercial ballasts will have wiring for the power and each bulb connected to the ballast already.
May or may not be color matched but not too hard to figure out if you want to buy a non RS brand ballast.
Another 2x39 ballast will work just make sure its rated for the same as the existing ballast Example HO/VHO. Rapid start......yada yada ya...
