Red Sea Reefer 250 Drainpipe

I’m going to plumb a drainpipe with a gate valve because the diaphragm valve is such a pain to deal with to get a consistent water level in my overflow. I believe the pipe is currently 3/4 but I’ve seen people use 1” pipe. Which is the best size to go with?

I’m in the process of changing mine to a 3/4 gate. The part below makes it easy to transition to 3/4 pvc. The barbed fitting comes out and a thread to slip adapter goes in and seals nicely using the o ring from the barbed fitting.
