just a quick question I have never seen one in person just the net there is one coming in to a LFS here and was wondering how close they look to a Mccosker/carpenters ? is there a noticeable difference ?

Yes, they are noticeably different. The anal fin of P. rubricaudalis is much brighter and more eye catching IMO.
 
besides the anal fin do they look similar when they are not displaying ?

To the common observer, they probably look the same.

They look very different to me at all times.

I agree with Hunter, to most they'll look pretty similar but so will most of the flasher wrasses. My wife thinks I have a bunch of orangish red fish and has no idea why I keep getting more
