I managed to snag a Red Sea G2 something yesterday for free off Facebook marketplace. Unfortunately while we were carrying the tank the woman helping me ran out of strength and ended up putting it down resulting in a chipped corner. It is currently sitting outside with 1/3 water to keep some snails and the live rock going. (I'm a beginner)

Is this tank salvageable? Do I trash it? Can I fix it or seal it? Any help is appreciated.

Personally, I wouldn't trust it, but that is just me

My bar for a sketchy tanks is quite high, and I see that as potentially just superficial damage, but compound that with Red Sea's track record, and I personally wouldn't trust this tank either. And I've filled tanks I've found on the side of the road 🤪

Let's see if @UncommonSense has any fixes, or thinks this is best for reptiles now 🙃

I think you should do some research on how much it would cost if all those gallons went on your floor and you weren’t aware for at least 8 hours. Then compare that $ amount to the $ amount you paid for the tank.

It’s a bummer but life happens. Maybe the tank being dropped now saved you from the likely eventual failure of the Red Sea tank in the future.

Oof… while I have technically seen even more violently chipped examples holding water, this would be a hard pass for me…

Even if you did extensive glass work to reinforce this corner of the tank, you’re still stuck with some truly terrible Red Sea silicone holding the tank together! (There are probably hundreds of Red Sea Reefer silicone seam failure threads around here on R2R by now, we see one posted roughly weekly….)

Now, you could theoretically disassemble this tank to glass panes, meticulously clean them, and carefully reassemble the tank using a high quality silicone from a known manufacturer… however, this is a non-trivial, highly labor intensive job, and that massive chip would call for replacement of the very expensive low-iron glass viewing pane…

All this said, I concur that this tank would be best-off used for reptiles, sadly… it would be optimistic at best to fill this tank in your home and expect it to hold that water inside it for any sort of extended duration…
