Hi, I am smack dab in the process of installing baffles into my sump for my new 180g tank build. I am using a 60 gallon Breeder tank as my sump. I have a Red Sea Reef Mat 1200, I am going to install in the first chamber, and I am trying to decide whether I should "hang" it on the side of the tank, or use the included legs to stand in the sump. I guess my question is, how deep does it need to be in the sump? Hanging it on the edge of the tank puts it about 1.5 inches higher in the sump, then if standing on the included legs on the bottom. Is there any preference over one or the other? Any benefits?

Any help or suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks

I really don't think there are any major benefits regardless of how you mount it. Whether it is hanging or sitting in the sump the water depth should be close enough for it to work properly ( I don't even recall RedSea giving depth requirements in the manual). There is a media basket on the bottom that will be harder to access if you are using the legs (I don't use mine). I have my 1200 hung on the side just so it is closer to the edge for easier maintenance.

Thank you for the reply. I like the idea of it hanging, so it's fairly solidly attached. I think I"ll do that. Do you have your water going into one side, or both? I have two water lines coming down, but am thinking of "T" them together into just one input to the roller. Could you post pics of how yours is setup? I'd love to see it.

Don’t T them into the roller. Have one go into each of they are the right size. Restricting them down if clogged could cause problems for you (flood)

I have two lines coming into the sump (one main and one emergency) but I only have the main going into the reef mat. The emergency just goes into the sump as it normally would. I will take a pic when I get home from work.
