Just recently purchased one of these skimmers and I have a couple of questions about it. First of all can I remove the collection cup with skimmer running or will it overflow and make a mess? Second is that the spec for the water depth is 7-8inches. If I was to have it in a water depth of 11 inches would it affect the performance of it?

In deeper water the skimmer is more likely to foam over into the collection cup not performing how it should. It will also make it more difficult to adjust the skimmer properly. An easy fix would be to make a stand for your skimmer. Something made out of acrylic or something as simple as eggcrate. In your case something that is about 3-4 inches tall. This simple quick fix will help out a lot in my opinion.

Not my pictures but these should give you a good idea. Found these In a quick google search
