As stated above I have a reef octopus 220-S classic internal skimmer. I really like it. Problem is twice over the last month the thing for no apparent reason starts to overflow. It runs great and then boom full skimmer cup sump full of skim mate big mess gross! I don't get it. I do have my airline going to the garage and it probably did start when I put the line out there. Would temperature effect the surface tension in the skimmer? Thanks for the ideas and suggestions!

This is a common issue with skimmers. Things that can cause this are many. Some include water changes, overfeeding, rising water level in sump.

Yes, however my issues do not seem to coincide with any of these things. Never happens after a water change, and the chamber that it's in, in the sump the water level never changes.

Any medication or coral food can cause it to go crazy, I once had to turn off my skimmer for a week and do a 20 gW/C because I used water conditioner.

I have been feeding the same foods from the beginning, and I have not used any medication or coral food in the system.

Thanks for the suggestions and insights folks, keep them coming!!!

You said that air tube is out to your garage? Do you have any type of filter on this line? If you are only noticing since you put the line to your garage then it is something in the air out there causing it. If it was going outside to the lawn then i would suspect chemicals.. In the Garage I would suspect chemicals or Carbon Monoxide?

Mine goes nuts when I feed frozen foods.

Yeah I was thinking carbon monoxide too, but there isn't any prolonged exposure to that and it is not consistent. I do feed frozen Mysis and Spirulina Brine daily. But that's the thing it does not happen consistently so it's been difficult ruling anything out.

I have the smaller skimmer by Reef Octopus and frozen foods do cause it to go batty. I turn it off during feeding times.
