I hate passwords. The powers that be keep changing the rules on what is needed for acceptable passwords. This got me to thinking. I have all these passwords on my reef tank devices. I mean, are there bands of renegades roaming neighborhoods just looking to screw with my alkalinity-to-calcium ratio? Is some nutcase lurking in a 72 Impala on my corner obsessed with removing my lunar cycle from the AI Primes?

The answer to all of your questions is..............yes :) I am in IT....forced password changes and locked out AD accounts make up a lot of my work lol

Your hacker is far more likely to be a teen suspended from school home in his pajamas hacking in to turn your AI Primes into a Disco Ball at maximum power to fry your most expensive coral.

As for the '72 impala, true hackers earn more money than us. No impala, Rambler, Nova, .....

Passwords - Pick something you can remember. Dare I say, "Aiptasia is Hell?" Then modify it. Example, "Aiptasia@7734." Why?

- No one can spell "Aiptasia."
- "Aiptasia" gives you the capital letter requirement.
- The "@" gives you the special letter requirement.
- "7734" is a upside down mirror image number representation of "Hell."
- Hell is where Aiptasia deserves to be.

Look on the bright side, your tank device software may switch to image recognition. Then you could use a hand in a single finger salute to give a finger print for the manufacturer and image for the hacker. ;)

Happy Holidays,
Jim, the guy whose password is 1234 .

Cybersecurity analyst here. The most common use case for hacking a WiFi connected device is to use it as a jump point to other devices on the network until they get to where they can get something valuable.

A good example is a casino was hacked in the mid-2000s where the attacker got it through a WiFi connected fish tank heater. Pretty applicable to our hobby haha

The biggest thing we voice to our employees is that it doesn’t matter if you don’t think it is important to protect, it matters how valuable it can be to an attacker’s overall goal

Probably not. Too many people still around with unprotected networks. I look at this way. If a hacker really really wants into your system he is getting in. But these days I'm thinking it is too easy just to do mass emails and get rich by whatever scam they are doing. Too many people fall for those types of scam emails. I had one just the other day that said if I didn't send them XXX in bitcoin they were going to publish a ton of embarrassing pictures of me in front of my computer. I sure wish I could have emailed them back and told them they could get rich off their new technology if they had figured out how to take pictures with a computer that didn't have a camera attached to it!!!!!!

Depending on what part of the world they are from tell them that they are EVIL (key word) and that god hates them. It tends to actually freak them out.
