Reefing 2020: What's the best and worst thing that happened?

2020 has been one crazy year to say the least! I think that's something we all can agree on! HA!

But how was it for reefing? I know many of us had more time for reefing since we were at home more and with that time I'm sure there were some great things and not so great things that happened. So let's talk about it!

Getting my Neptune Apex installed in August.

Well... it could be tropical storm Eta. I hope not.

2020 is great for reefing in my case, since I just got started! There are so many amazing things about reefs that I find very intersting!

Been Fairly good. Built out the new tank., finally got it cycling and ready for fish. Sold the big tank off, had an emergency incident that required a few days in the hospital, and proved to me, even with a cycling tank how important a controller really is...

costs are insane! Hopefully if / when COVID dies down prices will too!

1) Best thing is my lightning maroon clownfish started laying eggs.

It has been a real joy trying to raise them even though maroon clownfish spend 98% of their time trying to kill each other. I don't know what crazy reefing things I would have done if I didn't have to devote so much time to raising these guys.

2) The WORST thing is I have been to one crappy fish store one time this year. It was actually last week when it had been 364 days between fish store visits. I didn't buy anything and was barely tempted by anything. I live in a rural area so the fish stores I frequently visit are 7-8hrs away. By frequently I mean a couple of times a year. It's been 4 years of hell living in the middle of nowhere and I still miss weekly LFS visits, which I wouldn't be doing now even if I still lived within an hour of 10+ stores but I would probably still occasionally visit.

I will say my main display tank has probably never looked better and I really don't have room for new corals, and all my qt tanks are filled with clownfish babies but I want to go into a store and be genuinely surprised what I see and come home with something I never would have expected. I have done a few online orders this year and got some great stuff but it's just not the same. I miss in person interaction. The fact that I didn't really do anything in the months prior to the pandemic just amplify this for me.

Best thing that happened to me:
Upgraded my tank from a 30g to a 90g - and bought so many fish and corals that I have always dreamed of having!

Worst -
I had a velvet outbreak and it killed everything lmaoo. So now I am re stoking slowly

Worst... 2 fallow periods due to ich/velvet that cost me around 80% of my fish (including some replacements)

My bta completely recovered and split. Very cool. I also was shoved into sps with a local trade. We did a swap and ended up with sps.

Woes
I lost a carpenter flasher wrasse. It was always checking out the siphon hose and got to close. I had a Lubbock wrasse jump out of the tank.

Best thing is a I finally got my 90 gallon upgrade up and running. Worst thing is my very first new tank I ever bought back in 2009 had the side glass blow out and kill everything while I was at work

Best. Continued to upgrade our tanks until we now have our peninsula!

Worst. Several battles with velvet (we think) that took 12/16 fish back in March

But overall, I answered great. We are only 1 year 2 months into the hobby. We are learning fast, enjoy the R2R community, and the hobby as a whole.

The greatest thing was setting up the nanocube with top tier backbones. The system is stabilizing and I'm working out the initial unforeseen tasks.

Truth be told, the worst thing may have been, I didn't win anything in the members' raffle?

stuff growing. zoas turning in to colonies. monti's and blue ridge encrusting nicely, firework cloves taking off, new heads on blasto's & hammer. lobophytum getting BIG, shrooms reproducing like bunnies.

2. What was the WORST thing that happened to you in reefing in 2020?
copperband butterfly dying in a tragic accident. pricing for a replacement, IF I could find one healthy and eating, is stupid high.

I had some losses. It is sad to lose a coral or a fish.
