Reefing: The Trial by Fire Hobby...?

Trial By Fire, or "facing a challenging or difficult situation without being wholly prepared or trained for it," according to Collins Dictionary.

There are some things you just can't know or understand until you've experienced it, and I think that can apply to reefing as well. I will always be team "Do your research," but even the most diligent of hobbyists may still experience situations that they are not prepared for or understand.

• Do you think that reefing in general is a "trial by fire" hobby? Or do you think that most problems can be avoided with the right amount of preparation?

I suppose if you over-think every little thing, it can become a case of "Analysis Paralysis" ... and you might at some point just have to jump-right-in.

Yes. Everyone will lose livestock and equipment if they stay in long enough. Even pros, experts, and scientists are still learning about ocean species. This is a new hobby relative to others, no one knows it all.
