I am researching lighting options for a new Red Sea XL 425 build. My goal is an SPS dominant with ~30% softies for the lower spots.

I've now decided to go with the Red Sea ReefLED and am surprised to see they suggest such very different options for that tank:
* 2 x 90s
* 3 x 90s
* 2 x 160s

The display tank is 120cm (47″) long, 57.5cm (22.6″) wide and only 55cm (22″) high.

Surely 2 x 90s are just not enough?

My gut says 3 x 90s would give better coverage than 2 x 160s at a lower cost so a better choice.

Am I missing the point of the newer 160s or are they just meant for much bigger tanks and should not even be suggested for the XL425?

I am going to start with 2 ReefLED 90 which gives the possibility to upgrade to 3 later. I think the 160s will be too powerful and might just kill my corals when running at 100%. It would be a shame to invest all that money and then run the lights at 50% power.
