I am trying to get a firm understanding of target nitrate levels for a mixed reef tank. I was watching a video from BRS and saw this information:

Is this referring to nitrate nitrogen or nitrate ion? According to some Dr. Tim's videos, one needs to know whether the test kit is reading one vs. the other. I have a salifert nitrate test kit.

Any of the hobby test kits are going to tell you the correct nitrate. I think its nitrate ions but I am not certain on that by anymeans. As for nitrate, anywhere from 5-15 is a nice place since typically you still get good colors and it is easy to control. Below 5 is difficult and 0 is dangerous. Nitrate has a very wide range taht is acceptable. Phosphate I like to keep above 0 but below 0.1 as I still have enough for the system but not too little or too much to cause issues.
