refugium in overflow

I have an intank overflow going from the top to the bottom of the tank and the water emptys out through the bottom of the tank through a drilled hole. I was thinking because of a space restriction that i could put a pipe in the whole where the water drains down to the sump that would make it so there is about a foot of water in thr overflow and make a regufugium in there so the tank water overflows into thr refugium then over the pipe down into the sump. Do you think this will work. What are the ups and downs to doing it this way? Thanks

I cant say much to the pros or cons other than the main thing needed for a refugium (aside from light of course) is slow water flow so the nutrients have time to be absorbed by your macros and such, also I don't know how well some of the algaes used in a refugium would stand up to high flow

IMO, the amount of macro that could for in an overflow probably wouldn't be enough to get any valuable nutrient export. just my .02 though.

You can try it... but I can see your tank overflowing in the future. Just imagine anything getting clogged in the drain.

A clogged drain and subsequent overflow of tank water was my first thought as well.

How about growing only mangroves in it?

You could do that but from what I have heard they take some care and you need like 5 stocks to get good nitrate removal
