Hello. I just, as of yesterday, relocated my 220 gallon w/ 75 gallon mixed reef. The whole process took about one week. I had totes set up to store coral, rock and fish. Last night I filled the tank and add everything. The smell coming from the sump is pretty bad. The water is pretty cloudy. I have slight nitrate reading, didn’t test anything else. My temp is at 78 degrees. I will get a photo when the lights come one.

The smell and cloudiness led me to believe a bacteria bloom.

That's more than likely. When you moved it stirred up junk from sand bed and bottom of sump. I would do a couple of 10% water changes to improve water conditions.

When I filled the tank, I used about 80/20 new water to old water. The water in my sump I think is what caused it. The smell is so terrible.

Will it just fix itself in the next day or two if I don’t do anything?

Do you keep a refugium in the sump? If so, maybe something live there died during the move. Also, yes the bloom with go away by itself.

I only had rock in the inlet baffle from the drain. Nothing else. I don’t use filter socks, so I’m guessing it was all the crud from that. I never shop vac it out as I thought it would be beneficial. Guess not

Does it smell like rotten eggs? If so then it's hydrogen sulfide(?) . You want to do some water changes and keep an eye on your fish. You can do a search on here for info.

Leaning more towards this. Has my whole house smelling. Mixing up some saltwater. Will do some water changes as soon as it’s ready.

As I suspected, I still believe it was a bacterial bloom. As much as it smells and still does, it never smelled like rotten eggs. It appears to be clearing up but water is still smelly.

Doing a 30 gallon water change today.

I basically haven’t been exposed to new tank syndrome for many years. I’d like an ID on the algae below please ...

Wow.

Looks like your
basic blue green film algae.
Hey there stranger. Hope all is well.
A lot of changes happening recently, some good some bad. I'll look into this a bit more. So weird I don't know things that happen with new tanks as its been so long.

Hi Dan :).

Most snails like Cerith devour film algae. It will pass, I consider it positive sign.
If it does not resolve in a month there are more aggressive interventions like peroxide.

Actually quite the opposite. This was after water change wednesday. It looks quite bad.
It does seem bigger then it did upstairs.

I tend to agree it's a bacterial bloom but I'ld crank up skimmer to a wet skim, add filter socks and change daily maybe even some filter floss. It's going to take a week or two but it will clear up. Maybe ad some carbon also.

I’m running wet. I don’t run socks. I’m doing bi daily water changes of 30 gallons. I was running carbon for a little bit, I can start again.
Guess I have to remain patient.
