Hello!

I want to delve into a more scientific side of the hobby. I'm wanting to learn about things like coral anatomy, how reef ecosystems come together, various relationships between fish and coral and other things of that nature. I wanted to see if anybody had any books, lectures or other resources that they thought were interesting or informative.

All of these books are more or less great:

There are three big book series (Baensch, Fossa, and Sprung) if you want an "all in one" set. I think Baensch or Fossa might be the most complete, but it would be very hard for me to actually pick a favorite series. All three are really great.

I would also have to suggest my website, reefsuccess.com, to at least get you started looking at reef-related journal articles. You can certainly start out on google sholar, but it might also be helpful to have some starting points – there is tons of material out there.

MACNA has had some great presentations, but they're kinda spread out over YouTube and not that convenient to list. (Easy to search on YouTube tho!)

Maybe check out the Reef2Reef article section, there's a lot of great info posted for a wide variety of reefing topics:

I hope the helps!

That's a great suggestion!

(We may have become a victim of our own success – there's almost too much in there to go through! The search is nice, but then you're limited by the semantics. It seems like there need to be more categories, or tags need to be better leveraged or something to make the collection more browsable.)

Agreed! Members like Jay Hemdal and Randy Holmes-Farley, and other knowledgeable R2R members are regular contributors to the article section. There's lots of great info right there 🙂

The Reef Aquarium volumes I, II and III. Authors Charles Delbeek and Julian Sprung.
