Restricting overflow via ball valve?

I'm plumbing a grow-out overflow with 2" pvc, though the flow will be much, much less than that diameter tubing can handle. I want to make the overflow as quiet as possible, and understand that if I restrict the output flow a bit it will help with the cavitation/gurgle. Is it worth putting a ball valve in-line before the bulkhead to reduce the flow (as necessary to reduce noise)? Any plumbing gurus out there with thoughts?

I personally would NEVER restrict the flow on a Drain. Kind of waiting for a disaster to happen. ANy little thing can clog up the drain then where it is restricted. Do a durso or something of that nature to quiet it down!

Most use a gate valve for fine tuning but only if there's an emergency drain in case the primary drain fails...

doing a durso -type overflow through the bulkhead, but I'm concerned that there will not be a noticable difference because the large diameter of pvc compared to the flow. I'm expecting around 400gph max, but my bulkheads are fitted for 2" pvc. I know i could reduce it with fittings, but for only a few feet of run I figured the larter diameter tubing would be cheaper and better.

are you using a hang or a RR tank? they do sell durso online.

over all the overflow will only pass what your pump will send. however, you can send too much and cause an overflow over the top of the tank if the overflow can't handle the pump. you can reduce the flow with a ball value or gate value, which is better. more flow will kave more niose.

never reduce on the drain. if its a hang on the overlow will trap air and stop the flow and cause the water to run over the top of the tank. i have never had that happen but will never user on a hang-on again due to lak or sleep over that issue. with a RR its wont will with air and stop but something can glog it and cuase the same issue but its lesslikely.

more infor might help us , help you. how many holes? what size are they? what size it the tank? what size it the sump?


aqua silencer can help reduce the noise by a lot. i used one on my hang-on , but with my new tanks i dont need anything as it quite as is.
