I am installing Vectra M1 submerged in my sump as return pump. The inlet is just open, do we need to put a strainer or not necessary? I don't have refugium or any other living things in my sump

Thanks

Do you have any other filtration before the pump (i.e., filter socks, pads, etc.)? If not, you may want an inlet strainer to keep out errant snails, hermits, and small fish.

Just a thought.

At most use a screen, not something like a sponge that will accumulate detritus.

I generally run pumps as they come from the manufacturer - minus any sponges. That usually leaves some kind of cage over the intake.

Unless you have a specific reason to worry about something blocking the inlet I would generally recommend not doing anything extra.
