Return pump plumbing question

Is there any reason or benefit for having a ball valve directly after your return pump?

I’m doing a pump upgrade and was going to have to cut some pipe to make room for the larger pump and was questioning if I even need this ball valve and to what purpose. If I had an ac return pump I could see the benefit with being able to increase or decrease the flow, but with most pumps being variable speed dc pumps, I’m wondering if there was some other reason the installers put this valve in this location.

Guessing no! We continue to do things that solve problems that don’t exist anymore…..

Yeah if that drain was on the bottom of the tank and you needed to change out the pump, the ball valve would be clutch. Or with a regular pump to control the volume of flow. But if it's a standard return and a DC pump there's really no use for it. At least on that I can think of.
