Kind of realized that my return pump that does 350gph probably wont cut it for my shadow overflow, the main drain is a 1.5 inch that narrows down to a 1 inch pipe. The top of the tank is at about 50 inches, suggestions on GPH for the return pump?

So roughly 400gph, but what's your return plumbing? 3/4 pvc or poly tubing? How many 90s, how high does it have to go? Do you plan on running anything else off the pump like a reactor or manifold?its a 40 gallon tank
probably 3/4 poly tubing, 1 90 and it has to go ~4ft upSo roughly 400gph, but what's your return plumbing? 3/4 pvc or poly tubing? How many 90s, how high does it have to go? Do you plan on running anything else off the pump like a reactor or manifold?
1 inch max drain is 900 gph, so you could probably safely go up to 1000 gph max and be fine with your drain.probably 3/4 poly tubing, 1 90 and it has to go ~4ft up
But given the tank size shoot for 700gph or so, it'll be half by the time wear and gunk and head loss are accounted for.1 inch max drain is 900 gph, so you could probably safely go up to 1000 gph max and be fine with your drain.

no reason to need more than 200 gph to 240 gph.its a 40 gallon tank
I also like the reef octopus varios pumps. DC is nice, but costs a bit more for the adjustment of flow. With that head, that or the sicce 3 or 3.5. I have basically the biggest sicce ac pump they make on my 110 running a manifold and it is great, but almost maxes out my 1" drain. But it's a personal preference how much flow you send through your sump. I have a uv, big slimmer and chaeto, so I want as much as I can get. Other people run less, but a 10x goal works for me.Big fan of RO Varios-2. Extremely quiet. Parts are available if needed; unlike lots of other imported pumps. I use it on my 90, but it's maxed out. Would be perfect for your size tank. Hope this helps. Cheers!
