I recently took a tank in from my mother that had cracked. We moved everything to a smaller tank. At first we only put a couple pieces of rock in and left the rest out in a tote. Now we think we may want to put more in. It’s been about a month anything on the rock would be dead. What can I do to make this usable again or is it better to just buy new?

Rinse it really good, monitor nutrients and keep doing water changes.

Did you put a heater in it with a power head and feed it? If so it should be good to go.

If there was no powerhead in the tote then I would not use the rocks, organics will have died and melted into sludge by now IMO. IF there was a powerhead it should be ok.

No need to toss it. Put some bleach in the bucket along with a powerhead for a few days. The bleach will melt away any organics and turn the rocks white. You will end up with brand new white rocks you can either use or sell.

There are many threads on here about bleaching rocks, or google for more info. But its very common. I know from experience that if you toss them, you will will regret it a few years later when you have to buy more for another project.

So after watching the videos on bleaching rocks, it’s come to my attention that these are possibly man made rocks? I’m attaching a picture now.
