RODi Quagmire!

I have this seven stage RODi system new in the box I picked up last year and never installed it. Want to use it for my ATO and mixing station but I'm stuck. It's actually pretty cool unit as it has a U/V sterilizer as one of the stages. Here's what stumps me-it was made to be connected to a faucet and under the sink tank which I have neither. Has your typical tap water feed, waste water feed, a faucet feed and a feed to the under the sink tank. I spoke to the manufacturer and told them what I was trying to do which further confused me. Can I use this to fill my fresh water container? I'm not sure if I could just run the faucet line to my storage container and just cap the tank line or vice versa? Confused!

The tap fed and faucet fed are throwing me off. Do you mean a line to a drinking faucet?

Usually there is a line in for supply, a waste line and a product line, unless someone added a Tee off the product line

Under sink tanks are for RO/drinking water set ups. Basically so a person always has RO water ready to go. I am not sure it would be appropriate for RODI though.

You can screw it to a faucet or connect to cold water line then put the waste in the drain or if like me (rent).. I just put the waste line into the sink to drain.... RODI goes into brute can.

I do not understand why it has a UV or why that would be important. That seems gimmicky to me. What pathogen would be in drinking water that would survive saltwater? meh. The storage container won't be sterile anyways. I think UV is again... for drinking water/human consumption.

It sounds like the set up you bought was more for drinking then a reef tank. I am sure it can be modified. Make sure it actually has a proper DI stage and isn't just RO.

Attached is the picture. The blue line goes to a one of those RODi long neck water faucets that mounts on your sink where the sprayer usually sits. The yellow line goes to the storage tank you slide under your sink. Black line wastewater, Red line is the water feed line. In the install vid. the guy seemed to prime the tank with the faucet. After connecting everything he open the faucet until water trickled out then closed the faucet and said ..."now wait a little while and allow the tank to fill and you are ready to go. Seems to me the purified water is fed to the faucet and just not sure what to do about that yellow line or perhaps this is the wrong unit all together or maybe just way overthinking this?

Coming to that conclusion. When I called the place I got it and told him what I was wanting to do he didn't really understand and was more worried I as looking for a refund or return.

Post carbon is for taste and ADDS STUFF BACK TO THE WATER... you do not want that for a reef tank.

You would want to add/modify this filter... you could add a T line and have one go for drinking and one for RODI if you wanted. So make RO only with the carbon at the end for taste for drinking and then a T to skip all those and go to "DI" for the tank.

My husband made the same mistake when he gifted me my first RODI... the company actually had "DI" in the listing though even tho it was a RO machine so they ended up sending me a DI portion to add... :p I never bothered to use the tank since I didn't care about on demand drinking water.

Basically you would not want to use the post carbon filter, the UV (it won't hurt but also won't be useful so no reason to pay for bulbs every 6 months/year), under sink container, and you need to add "DI" portion (I use two cartridges).

I would just return it if you can since it is going to be more cost to fix this. The only reason to keep it is if you want to also have drinking water. Keep in mind RO systems... since for drinking need filters removed and the tubing/housing portion bleached from time to time. I don't do this with reef tank only water. The bacteria isn't an issue for our tanks.

As noted above you don’t need the UV, you don’t need the carbon polish unless youre using to drink it.
I use the tank as I like to be able to fill quickly and having 1-2 gallons ready to go is a plus.

You will need a true DI canister as well and I don’t see a TDS meter, very useful as well..

The suggestion to return and get what you need without the extra BS isn’t a bad one..
