I have The Royal Excusive 180 Double Cone Skimmer that came with the speedy 3 mini 50 watt pump. The pump broke and I will say that Scott the Rep was very helpful. The new replacement 50 watt pump I bought is so cheap feeling. It's nothing like the old pump. Anyone else have good luck with this new pump.

I understand what you are saying. The housing on them is different. It still works great though!

Have you reached out to RE? I understand you mentioned the US rep but when was this if you don't mind me asking. My exchanged with RE recently was regarding their new RD3 replacement pump that is in the works due out later this year. Not sure what time line you are looking at or for what pump but reaching out to RE via their portal always gets a response for me.

I just received the new pump today and it's the one in the link that I posted. I haven't tried it yet. I'm just saying it sure feels cheep and not the same quality as the old Red Dragon speedy 3 mini. I thought they used to be a close to the Abyzz pump but not this one

Ok, got it. My understanding after exchanging emails with them a couple weeks back is that they have a new RD3 that is manufactured in Germany due out later this year. I was looking to buy another one and did not like the current versions for the very reason you noted. I saw somewhere on youtube a video and RE mentioned the new pump after finding proper part source in their area.

They did not give an actual date on release in the US other than later this year.

They do have a more expensive version of pump that would also work. Maybe this is the one your thinking. The cheaper version is the one they recommended for a replacement.

Shoot, I'm going through this exact same problem. 3 year old pump that was ran behind my filter fleece in my dreambox it's entire life just went bad for no reason 1 year out of warranty. They suggested that same cheap one you have that costs $350. Or they suggested I could buy a $1,000 one that's similar to my last one. Not sure it's worth it if it's only going to last 3 years again. A little disappointed. I did not expect them to cheap their product line out when I bought my dreambox 4 years ago. They were known in the industry for being quality driven, so this is a sad departure from that.. Let me know what you think of the new x pump

I haven't tried the new pump, I think I'm just going to sell that Skimmer. I had the same choice 350 or a thousand dollars to replace the pump. I put my Life Reef Skimmer back online.

Funny you are familiar with Life Reef too. He was the final guy I was debating with between going dreambox or Life Reef. Part of me is happy I went with Dreambox, more of me is like, "dang, shoulda just listened to the life reef guy and saved $10k"

The thing that dissuaded me from buying anything from them is their pumps. They fail. It's frequent.
I didnt want to drop the money on an expensive skimmer and be Exclusively Royaled if you know what I mean when the pump fails.

I went with Reef Octopus Instead for sump, skimmer and pumps and I'm more than good. No problems.
My only complaint is the LEDs on their pump controllers seem to be shady, but everything works solid.
I keep a spare main pump just in case, but so far, no issues with the original.
