So last night I was looking for my royal Gramma. Could not find him. Sometimes he will hide for a day but I can usually find him. Not last night. I'm going to look again today but I pulled up a website on life span of this fish. 5-6 years.

Got me wondering. Here is a pic from April 2014.
I thinking I'm ahead of the game at 8 years? My wife loves this little fish, I may need to get another one, we'll see.
Anyone else have a fish longer than the normal life span?
I'd like to hear the stories.

I wouldn’t look into the numbers on these sites too much, they say a Clownfish has a lifespan of no more than 7 or 8 years but people have kept and are keeping Clowns into their teens, twenties and beyond. 8 years for a Gramma, depending on the size you got it, is not bad. Any aggression? If not could be lifespan especially if you got it as an adult.

So a funny thing just happened.
Looked everywhere when I got home from work can't find him.
My bta finally went into my trap and I wanted to take a pic of him so I can sell him. Look who is in the background! I still can't find him, he is sneaky.

I have a pair of clown fish that are 16 years old...yes in human years..lol
I bought my clown pair the same month as my Gramma. Still have them. I have 2 bta's they host so I hope they don't miss one of them. The other is on an island rock I made that is magnetized to the back wall.

Whilst it’s not a RG, I have currently got a Yasha Goby that is exceeding the average lifespan. It seems most yasha’s die after 2 years, mines coming up to 3 years soon.

Great to hear your RG appeared again though!

I have several fish that are going on their 5th tank in 12 years including 2 blue tangs, 2 percs, 2 occ clowns, a cardinal. I have a lemon peel and bi-color that are at least 8ish. 20->30->90->240->currently in a black 150 rubber tote and will be a 215 (new tank) in about a month. (the tangs were the size of a quarter when I got them) and prompted the move to the 90 and then 240

You gotta tell us your secrets OP, what's your temperature and parameter, what do you feed your fish and how often? Have your gramma grown much if at all?

75 gallon
78~79 degrees
Alk 8ish
Cal 420
Mag 1500 as of late, like to keep it 1350
Po4 0.1
No3 2.0 tested 2 days ago.

He's a standard size roughly 3"
Low stocking for a 75 cuz of the purple tang. 2 clowns, 1 fathead, and 1 algae gobie. Just added a molly also. 2 shrimp, cbs and fire, 2 serpant stars, one is red, few hermits and snails.
I feed once per day, sometimes twice. I always rotate my Foods. Frozen, flakes, pellets, I don't stick to one brand of any kind.
I have a 50 gallon sump with a ton of rock in the basement.
I don't have a lot of rock in the display but, there are two deep caves he resides in. Hence why I couldn't find him. He usually pokes his head out.

How long have you had your Purple Tang and how big is he?

I probably got him in 2015. not sure, best guess.
Nose to tail, about 5"~6". Had him since about 2.5".
I have low stocking of fish and lots of room to swim (for a 75). I don't recommend a tang in this size tank for everyone. Eventually I'm getting a bigger tank, but covid screwed up my house buying power for now. My plan is a 6 foot tank in a finished basement with a fish room behind it for the sump.

Sounds good. Do you think your Purple is going to grow much larger? And what are your fish plans for the 180?

Anyway congrats on the lifespan of your current fish. Keep going and I hope you enjoy them for many years to come.

I had a royal gramma in my tank for 9 years before rehoming him. He was healthy at that point. Not sure what he is up to now.
