Sadly, if you don’t use correct padding for the glass, it can warp the plastic enough to crack it. Had it happen only once to me before I learned it. Once a hole/seam forms, the magnet rusts and expands making the crack larger.

Yes this does happen to powerheads in aquariums. Everything with magnets will rust. One needs to contain my check all pumps and feeder that use magnets to affix them to glass. You can buy new wet sides for Ecotech pumps. I clean my powerheads once a month and look for this every time.

I would have to buy another motor Block and impeller... almost $90. It’s out of warranty by over a year.

I’m just glad I caught it before corals started to show signs of stress.

Posted similar about my icecap 3k gyre. People trying to tell me the ferrite magnets won’t rust....period.....but from my materials class in school years ago, i believe it all depends on the alloy they use (note: some titantium knives show red rust and others won’t). My magnets for my icecap definitely rusted so I coated with silicone

Regarding the vortech specifically .....

Make sure you are using the correct dryside spacer (for your glass thickness). Failure to do so can reduce the life of the dryside and/or affect the magnet assembly. The wetsides on these do wear, so it's a good idea to examine them periodically. ETM used to sell wetside parts, but not anymore, and not ever just the magnet. I've had a number of the wetsides last 5 plus years, though they are recommended for replacement every 18-24 months.

You don't have to buy the full wetside. I just bought a few spare cages and swap them out when cleaning.

My 2 year old Gyre wet side magnets. Rust oozing from both of them.
The motor block quit, so I was going to use them for a frag rack.
