Hi new to the forum and just want to know if anyone has experienced inaccurate readings with the Salifert ammonia test results I can’t seem to determine a solid colour from one to another I’ve heard it can be cloudy even when at 0? Any light shed on this will be much appreciated.

All results by color comparisons are subject to complications and people report interesting results from their tests routinely.

Ammonia testing results have especially interesting results reported and if you are measuring a new tank, a cycling tank or an old tank or freshly mixed saltwater positive results (an their meaning) is all over the map for explanations.

How long ago did you dose your bacteria?

I'm just trying to see if it even makes sense for you to test ammonia. I never did with my most recent cycle. Just watched my No2 and No3.

I dosed it on the 4th it’s now the 6th I have been testing for No2 and No3 also and both at 0 did you use colony?

I used Dr. Tims and Ammonium Chloride. Waited about two weeks, keeping an eye on No2, then went ahead and added 4 fish. All fish are still alive except for (1) chromis that got bullied. That was back in July.

Honestly, I wouldn't test for ammonia. I think all test kits are junk for that specifically. Just watch your No2 closely and have patience :)

EDIT: The only time I would test for ammonia is if you have something die later on down the road. That will let you know if you need to do an "emergency" WC.
