I'm having trouble reading this kit. If I look down into the sample container my Nitrates are 10, but if I look through the side it looks more like 100. Which of these readings incorrect?

If you use the method of looking through the side (the low range method), you have to divide your reading by 10. It sounds like your nitrates are around 10 ppm, either way you are reading it.

Ok so looking through the top, the reading is taken as is. But if I read through the side, I divide by 10, correct?

That is correct. So really you are spot on with both methods, lol something I haven't been able to achieve in almost a year of using that kit.

My tank just cycled, and I almost crapped my pants when I saw 100 through the side. The directions aren't very clear on how to read these things

This post is correct. I thought it was pretty clear in the instructions. :D

My kit has been very consistent between in those two methods. But I may check out the Red Sea.

(ETA: posted thru Siri without proofreading!!!!!!)

saliferts n03 test kit eats it.
Blanket statement much? Salifert might not be preferred by you but by no means does it "eat it" I prefer salifert over red sea any day but by no means is red sea not any good. To the OP, your kit is fine and no need to change. Salifert is very accurate with there tests.

After year of using salifert and many other test kit's , I am now using the LaMotte nitrate. Much easier to see the difference in colors. Also using the alkalinity kit also. The first unit is a tad pricy but the refills make it worth the money. I also sent them a request to make other kits for the aquarium industry.

I don't get so confusion on Salifert nitrate test kit.
For it is simple:
Look at vial side, if it is cristal clear it means 0.
If there is a pinky color then it is by the shade of pink between 0-2.5 or 2.5-5.0 or 5.0-10.0.
If it is pink dark it is between 10.0 and what ever high.
Don't chase numbers.
What I don't want is 0 = cristal clear and dark pink = 10.0 and more. In between is OK and very easy to understand if the pink is more towards 2.5 or more toward 10.0.
