Bacteria is very high in the water and kills most aquariums here so I've added a UV sterilizer. So far, no deaths.

If bacteria is high in that area, it's because they are feeding on something in the water. The bacteria that your UV is killing will also release whatever they ate back into the water. If it were me I would reconsider my water source.
