is there any tricks that I can incorporate to avoid salt creep on the outside of the glass (along the rim of the aquarium). Is this problem as a result of using any type/form of cover(lid) versus not using one?

Condensation is one cause as is seepage under an tank rim and also splatter/must from wster reaching the surface
Often as simple as Saran Wrap will create a barrier but assure there are no leaks or seepage
