I am currently mixing tropic Marin pro in large 32 gallon batches at 1.026 SG and running an AWC over the period of a week.

Around day 2-3, a noticeable brown precipitate forms along the walls of the barrel and on the water surface.

My question is, is this normal and how would I differentiate a foul mix vs. precipitation?

Yep, it's fine. But I thought Tropic Marin salt was supposed to be super "clean" from the residue? That was one reason offered for the very high price point.

Yeah I was under the same impression. I can attest it is not super clean. I’ve consistently got brown precipitation from their mix.

Actually you can never know for sure (until its tested long time).
You remember TM had an issue with contamination from the plastic bucket a few years ago, that killed some corals. Red sea may have some brown organics, but not really precipitation, and that salt is not new and tested for decades.
If this is a precipitate, thus very hard like crystals, I would concern. Why take the risk when there is salt that does not give this. I would definitely change salt.
