Ok so I’m just wondering if anyone else using instant ocean salt notices a smell when mixing with water. I have my salt in laundry room (but in a box), and I’ve always smelled this almost detergent like smell when I mix the water with the salt. I’ve done water changes already, and my tank hasn’t crashed or anything, so not really what this smell might be?

I’ve had LA salt smell before when mixed, and it registered .5ppm of ammonia. But that smell wasn’t fragrant, more like a public restroom...

Yeah it’s mainly when first mixed, when I’m about to water change hours later I can’t smell it really, I mean if my tank is still doing good, I should still use the salt? Or should I throw out that bag and try one of the others I have of it?

So I just did the water change, will update if anything happens. To be safe, I threw out the remaining bag of salt (was almost empty), and I’m going to get some new 5 gallons buckets.

Update, did water change tonight. Used new bag of salt, cleaned out bucket with freshwater and dried it. Rinsed Heater and dried it. Still got the smell.

Have you ever taken a trip to a Saltwater get-away?
I notice every time I smell my tank it reminds me of the times we've gone to Cancun, Hawaii and other places.
That ocean smell makes me want to book another trip !!!

You're probably just smelling the Ocean !!

I would imagine it's just everything mixing. Any salt I've used had a smell when mixing. Red sea had almost a clean bleach smell to me but my wife couldn't smell it. I wouldn't worry about anything being wrong.

I just set up a FOWLR. And used instant ocean salt and it smells chemically also. Just found this thread now. I use vibrant sea by seachem for my reef so never smelt this
