What would be best fish to keep sand clean? I had a sand sifting star but heard those would basically do more harm to your sand bed than good!

As stated above, nassarius snails are a good option for eating detritus that settles on your sand bed as well as to stir up the sand a bit. You may also want to look into a sand-sifting goby

Thanks I have a variety of snails mexican turbo, astera and I believe I have nasarius also

If you want a fish a yellow headed sleeper goby is great but they are swimming sand storms but they work there tail off pun intended LOL

I had to remove my goby because he kept putting sand on my corals.

Try sand sifting cucumbers. They are cheap and eat sand, eat the algae and detritus off of it, then poop the sand out clean.
