Clean your sand bed.

Run carbon.

Clean your filter weekly. Most people don’t use canister filters on reef tanks because they have to be cleaned so often. It’s kind of a pain. A good HOB filter would be a better choice IMO.
I thank you all for the advice and will be adding carbon back into the filter and clean, clean, clean. Also I am working on getting an HOB filter

I ran into a similar issue and I will try the toothbrush and siphon method at the next water change. please keep us posted on the outcome, I want to get my algae issue under control as well, maybe I can learn something from your experience.
