Semi-newbie, finally got my own tank!

Hello friends! I've been helping with my dads 120 gal aquarium for a while and have been coming here to find answers. Since for my birthday I finally got my own (55gal) aquarium I figured I should graduate from lurker to member. I'm definitely still learning the jargon but I'm hoping to catch on quick!
