Has anyone ever used a large septic tank for salt water storage or as part of a filtration system. I have my reason why I'm thinking of using these over other large tanks. Is there any kind of chemicals in the material of these things like you see in silicone 2 that keeps it mold resistant or is it inert so not to kill any bacteria that helps break down your septic waste? I know it's resistant to corrosion for obvious reasons.

You would need to check if these are food grade plastics. Despite what they are being used for they could be. There’s like 4 plastic types that are considered food grade. Gotta see if I can find the list. The yellow one looks like Sponge Bob’s pineapple house.

Here’s a pretty good list:
  • Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
  • Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)
  • Acrylic (PMMA)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) ...
  • Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) ...
  • Polycarbonate (PC) ...
  • Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) ...

If you're going to leave these above ground, you may want to make sure they can be filled up with water without the sides buckling. They might require the support of dirt around them so they don't bulge.

I checked out the yellow plastic septic tanks at the local TSC. They have "NOT FOR POTABLE WATER USE" embossed into the plastic. Don't know if this is because of the type of plastic from which they are made or just because the intended use is as a septic tank. Best to research and determine exactly what plastic they are made of and, as you asked, whether there are additives that might be toxic.

This is the route I'm taking after our move and the new build.
These are food grade storage containers for well water. I'm actually going to buy 2 2000 gallon containers and install them into the fish garage with all plumbing ran underground to the fish room.
This should give me enough reserves for two complete water changes after mixing the second batch if ever needed.

I actually have one of these. They are often chopped in half and used in aquaponics system and other garden applications

I believe I found the same product or very similar for that very purpose. Instead of septic tanks they are cisterns.
