Wins inspire us and loss teaches us. Inspire and teach one another today by sharing!

Tell us about a recent WIN or LOSS, or both, with the community!

Shutting down my tank would be a loss. However, the win is moving into a new house and restarting the tank with a whole new perspective!

My corals are growing which is nice, but when I compare to a local reefer I find my corals are growing way way slower which is not a win.

I have had both loss and wins just recently. I’ll post the vids for details, as it will make a very lengthly post. The gist is that I changed salt to save a buck, and nearly crashed my two sps tanks. Total loss was a few colonies and frags, but I took quick action to turn things around. The lesson? Stick with what works.

Do you think changing salts more slowly would have avoided it? I'm contemplating changing salts to one that matches my Alkalinity better and doesn't leave brown crud in my mixing bin

I honestly don’t know, but changing it too quickly could’ve been a contributing factor. It was just weird because there was nothing testable that came up as a cause. I do know that dosing too much potassium after the fact (I thought it was low, and I hate color changing tests! Lol!) didn’t help either. But when I did large water changes back to the old (RC) salt, the coral recovered very quickly and have been doing great since.

I wanted to change from RC because I have to adjust the alk, and yeah, it has that residue. The brown stuff is mostly an inconvenience for me though (because I have to clean it), and it doesn’t seem to affect the tanks any. Luckily I can use the other salt for my 135 gallon fowlr though.

RC be giving your corals withdrawals lol

How about a tie? I’ve crossed the one year mark of being a reefer, which feels great! And most of my corals are doing well and growing in my 4-month-old tank upgrade. However, my battle with dinos is really dragging—I’m making progress but it’s taking forever and I’m sick of brown sand!
