Shimming stand question.

First I will say the tank is going on carpet. I am going to use plastic shims, I havent decided if I want to use EZ-Shims Heavy Duty Shims or TimberWolf shims.

I believe I have read that if you have to shim the stand do all 4 sides and not just 1 or 2 sides. Is that correct or no?

My other question is, how far apart should I space the shims? The Ez-Shims are 1.2" wide if I spaced then 1" apart I would need 60, the TimberWolf shims are 1.5" wide so I would need less. Does 1" seem to close together? Is there a norm or is however far apart ya feel like doing? I feel like the more there are the better but I have no idea.

If you go over carpet and foam, I would put down 3/4 inch plywood over the carpet. If you have to shim, shim between the plywood and the bottom of the stand. A shim at each corner and at the center of each long side is enough. Shim under the vertical supports of the stand.

Yea I know putting carpet isnt ideal but the only tiles surfaces in my apartment is in the kitchen and the bathroom. So 3/4" plywood down first, should I go a little larger than the stand or flush to the sides?

No, but I was on hardwood flooring. Here's my process.

Forgot to ask yesterday, Windy recommended 3/4" does it really matter if I use 3/4" or would 1/2" work? I cant really imagine why It would matter.

You are using the plywood to" bridge" the imperfections of the carpet and pad. The thicker the better, or the plywood will raise between the shims like it was quilted. The cost difference isn't much so I assume you don't like the look of the ply or is it something else?
If I were doing it, I would double the 3/4" plywood since I am buying a full sheet anyway. I would cut it just larger than the stand and when the shimming was done, I would have plenty of space to nail on a trim to cover the ply, the gap and the shims.

I just didnt want to have to buy a full sheet and I didnt see any half sheets of 3/4" but ill check again at lowes. I already have my trim on so im not sure how I am going to hide the plywood :(.

Maybe oversize the plywood by an 1" or so, route the edge and paint it black or whatever. .just an idea...

You can get scribe or shoe moulding that is 3/4" tall and just edge the ply to hide those edges, maybe prepaint them since you are on carpet, pin nail or glue on.
Stand looks good.

Thats what I was thinking, that would probably be easiest. And thanks. Up close you can see all the imperfections I gave up on but from a distance it looks purty good.
