I'm leaning towards getting the Marine X 60.2 as my first tank.

My cycling plan (wip - still need more research):
- Start with only life rock
- 2 weeks later added 2 clownfish
- 2 weeks later add clean up crew
- 2 weeks add 2 more fish (not sure which ones)
- 2 weeks start adding soft coral
- 5 months later when I have a hang of everything perhaps start with the more advanced coral

Should I purchase the Nero 5 wave pump right away or wait till I get coral? Thinking I may get more life out of the pump if I get it when I need it.

Yeah, if you don't need it now, don't stress it. But if there's a store out there with a sale on them, get it and just leave it in the box.

Is it only needed for coral or do fish benefit from it too?
Definitely needed for Corals. I don't think fish need powerheads, but I noticed mine were looking a bit depressed when I had a broken pump. I think it's in their genetics to swim with and against currents, and will make them more comfortable and happy with it.
