I've just started cycling my first reef tank using Red Sea's ReefMature kit and am wondering if there is any point to ghost feeding at all. Will it stall the cycle or help it along?

I would also like to hear people's thoughts on the ReefMature kit. I understand that it's a product aimed solely at beginners and a more experienced reefer probably wouldn't touch it.

Ghost feeding during the cycle means the food will rot and increase the dissolved organics and causing algae bloom the moment you turn on the light. I would not do this.

I'm not familiar with this kit, but cycling is straightforward wether you are a pro or a beginner. Bring the ammonia up to 2 ppm then wait for it to drop to zero and nitrate should increase while the ammonia drops. Ammonia should be zero and nitrate should be about 10+, that is a cycled tank.

Thanks for the reply, I know some people ghost feed during the cycle because they want those extra dissolved organics but I'll probably skip that.

I'm also planning to add phytoplankton and copepods to establish a culture in the tank once it's cycled before adding fish.

Just a slight correct “toward zero”, not necessarily to “zero”. That accounts for nitrification being observed and the for test kit and user reading not being precise.
