I know people spend $$$ on the highest end products but show me your janky DIY additions to the tank that just make it work! I’m talking the cheapest most cost effective methods to hold you out in case you are saving for the big ticket item! Mine? A cheep egg crate till I can afford a custom lid (in the middle of washing it off)

That gives me an idea for my upcoming build. I was going to buy a controller board and put it on sliders. The board I'm looking at is $160 and isn't as wide as I'd like. I think I have more than enough wood to make one.

When you have closets full of used equipment, multiple different brand names, sometimes you need to improvise.
Issues arise and new equipment delivery is not always a reality you use the MacGyver method.

Custom light mounting rail. And by that I mean leftover headboard rails I had lying around (cost $0).

This shot also has a couple bonuses: DIY screen lid (home depot + BRS), DIY feeding portals (ABS and acrylic), and DIY overflow covers (ABS).

These Amazon TV mounts and some angle brackets to mount my Kessil pendants. Now I just need to come up with a way to get the Helix bars up off the tank. I like being able to remove the lid and work on the tank without having to move lights. The Kessils allow me to do that but the Helix bars not so much.

Filter bucket because i couldn't find anything tall enough for the sump. 1" holes are drilled at the top on 1 side to allow water to flow out, on the opposite side the drain. I place filter pad and any other mechanical media needed inside. This also helps cut down on bubbles/salt creep

Pond plant baskets with a couple of magnets to isolate anemones or fish.

With some (styro)foam and zip ties you could make them into floating isolation baskets.

Also, I think cheap diy does not have to be janky.

They are normal (here in Europe) 25 liter jerry cans.
For the lettering I used standard self adhesive vinyl letters and numbers I bought at the hardware store.
