Show Off Your Sumps!

Well, all day researching and studying your pics. Here's my sump plan for the 500 monster tank going in. I have a bunch equipment to work with, 1 29 g actual sump, 1 18g actual sump, a 2 90g tanks, 1 55g tank, 2 120g tanks. 3 octo skimmers of different sizes. Dosing pumps and 4, total ATO pumps.

I am tech stoopid and like @VintageReefer 's plan of crypto fuge w/ algae vs gadgets/mechanical.

Here's my plan. Advice??
 
Work in progress should be up and running in a week or so…cubby hole will eventually hold all electronics with with glass doors

I seen another thread with only one reply. Show me your sump set up, bonus points for explaining the sections and what they’re for!

Do you have a refugium? Sand bed? What kind of bio media? What kind of sponge?

Looking to make an inspirational thread for myself and others looking into sump creation!
I got a crowded sump, you name it I got it, I even got an algae scrubber in the back.

Mines not operational yet and is currently a mess! Still a work in progress. Also not sure it’s what your looking for as it’s a “sump room”/basement

Took a note from past experience and am a big fan of natural filtration with macro algae’s. So primary drain splits between tanks. The left (20L tank) will house variety of macros then return to first chamber of main sump. Main 60 breeder sump first chamber will house chaeto and maybe another variety or two that love to tumble.

Second chamber is heaters, skimmer, probes, and probably dosing location for Randy’s 3 part balling supplementing kalk once its demand is surpassed.

Third chamber will be return pump with apex level sensor and avast auto feeder tied into return pump. Hopefully it will work how I’m hoping? Along with Avast ATO.

I'm still setting it up, but it's all in! Waterbox 150.4 with a Reefmat 1200, no sump mods needed

That’s dope brother. Do you have a tank thread? I’d love to hear more about your equipment choices and that white pipe thingy. Is that the return drain?

The white pipe is a hard pipe on my return pump, with a total 3 unions, one at the pump, one at the top, and one in the middle, to make it easy to maintain. In my past life, I was a plumber, so this was pretty easy.

The equipment came from looking at RedSea stuff for a year. The advertising got me but overall, it seems like solid gear, Filter, skimmer, and ATO all in one app is nice
 
That's a lot of dosers. What are you using them for? Moonshine dailies?
Randy’s 3 part balling (so 4) will be heavy in macro’s so assume I’ll be dosing Randy’s ammonia for nitrate and maybe phosphate. If not will dose chaetogro on one for the macro’s.

Here's my custom 3 gallon sump for my ten gallon reef. Yes, you read that right. I sump everything, including a 2.5g cube in our kitchen. :D

I cut the glass to build the sump and ran it as a fw sump on a small cichlid tank for a year or so until I built a new tank for them. I played around with one of the baffles at an angle until I realized it smoothed the water flow and made for very stagnant water surface in the refugium area.

I redid the baffle so the water has to drop straight down and tumble. I think I'll actually file in some grooves on the top edge to make it more rough and aerated, I love aeration.

The first chamber catches the water from the primary and emergency drain. It has k1 media in a bag at the bottom, held down by a bunch of rubble rock. I have a sprinkling of silica sand to hopefully help out the sponges (no issues with dinos so far). The heater is in the chamber as well. I watched a lot of videos on waste water treatment plant settling chambers and depth versus distance. This should let most particulates to settle out as the primary drain exits below the water. That should feed my colony of detrivores and hopefully sponges and feather worms in the future. It's a dark chamber as the walls of the sump are covered with black expanded pvc foam and a tile lid.

The right hand side is coarse filter foam with macro algae and a timed light. The flow goes down thru the foam and into a half inch high gap underneath, flowing under the last baffle into the return pump chamber.

I briefly tried to do a dual return, but it didn't provide sufficient in tank circulation for my liking. Plenty of tank turn over and thru put for the sump, but the corals didn't really get a lot of movement. I ended up putting a circulation pump into the display tank. I'm still futzing about with that, trying to figure out where to put it unobtrusively. Hard task in a ten gallon tank.

Ultimately, I redid the primary drain and put a ball valve on it after bending some pvc into a gentle arc. I also drilled 1mm holes after the ball valve at an angle pointing down and into the pipe to act like a Venturii sucking in air to aerate the sump water. I cut coarse filter foam to fit around the piping holes in the tile lid to lessen salt creep. The pill containers are droppers for kalk and mag. :D
