I have 2 Oreni. One interesting behavior I don’t see people talking about is their love for eating bristle worms. I feed them live bristle worms from other tanks. But they will scour the reef early morning and pull them right out of the rocks.

Did you get your skunk?
Bought online for in-store pickup and it wasn't actually there... hoping to find a few at some point though. I want to add a starcki, marcosi, purpureus, and fourmanoiri to my 8x2x2' 240 gallon. Nice contrast with the anthias, wrasses, damsels, angels, butterflies, tangs, and moorish idol.

Well, our bonding has officially started. Took only 30 minutes for Sushi to do this... he's truly special 😆 I intervened and got him out in the next minute. Good news - I've not seen any aggression between them so far.

Update on our two tilefish (Sushi - skunk tilefish, Tamago - new yellow tilefish) bonding process. It's going well!

Tamago freed himself from the acclimation box overnight, so I found him swimming with the rest of the fish in the morning lol.

I quickly added more rockwork and a whole new cave as a neutral territory. Since then I've already seen both tilefish sharing the new cave several times. Tamago also uses Sushi's tunnels and burrows, and Sushi doesn't seem to mind.

I've noticed a little bickering here and there, but nothing major. It probably helps that Sushi prefers the top portion of the tank, while Tamago mostly swims at the bottom.

Here's a short video I put together. I'm honestly so in love with these two :)

And here's some more pictures of Tamago, he's so handsome 😍

I found Tamago on top of my lid today 😢 I tried to revive him for a good 30 minutes, but he was unfortunately gone. This is so heartbreaking. I really thought I had my lid 100% secure.

After watching the footage, it looks like one of my shrimp's antennas touched him while he was hovering at the bottom of the tank. It scared him and he went completely crazy, eventually lifting the light mount insert in the lid and somehow jumping through it. After that, the insert fell back into place, so he had no way to get back into the tank.

I uploaded footage showing him freaking out, then jumping out in slow motion (at 00:12 mark, top right corner), and then how the insert looks at the end of the video. Maybe it will help someone else too. I am going to think of ways to weigh down that insert so it cannot happen again. RIP Tamago 😢

So sorry. Happened to one of my viviens and iridis.
I am so sorry. How do they even get enough force to lift the lid... just crazy. This has been the hardest loss so far. I'm working on turning one of my cameras into a motion sensor to detect anything moving above the lid and send me an alert. I already have fish door sensors to alert me if they've been opened for more than 15m too. I'm not losing another fish like this.

I’m very sorry for your loss. I’ve been following your post periodically about your two tile fish. I’ve had two long nose hawkfish jump out of small openings . Unbelievably heartbreaking.

Well, I've been looking for a skunk tile, fourmanori tile, and bluehead tile locally for the 240 gallon and so far still haven't found one. I did find these 2 beauties (along with a few other really nice fish) yesterday, and got them into quarantine.

Just 2 individuals that were together at the shop as far as I know. Hopefully they spawn though, that would really be something! They seem to get along quite well with one another. Still planning on adding a fourmanoiri, a couple marcosi, a starcki, and hopefully a randalli as well.

This is my dream too, to have them spawn. My two tilefish seemed very comfortable in 75g and they weren't a mated pair, so I wonder if I could try going for two pairs once I upgrade to 130g in the future.

Do you have any info on how one might be able to tell their sex? Everything I read suggests males and females look completely identical.

Yup, as far as I know there is no visible external differences. So having multiples would increase your chances lol.

Quick update, I found a sunburst anthias and it's arriving this week! I'm hoping it'll get along well with my tilefish after my failed attempt with a borbonius anthias.

In the meantime, I made a silly video to show what it's like to own a tilefish 😄

My LFS just got a new shipment of skunk tilefish. What are the chances one's the opposite sex from mine and they'd pair up? 🤔 Would I try to get a smaller individual in that case? I wish it was easier to sex them!
