Skimmer needed when I have a refugium

Hello Reefers. A month ago I created a 10 gallon refugium for my 36 gallon reef tank. I have a backpack skimmer. I had been looking at how to move that down to the refugium. Then the skimmer motor went out.

My question for the team is for a 36 gallon tank with a refugium is a skimmer really needed? I would rather put that money into the 60 gallon predetor tank I am building.

a skimmer is never "needed" but be prepared to do more water changes.. if I were you I'd try to find a new motor for it or pick up a second hand skimmer somewhere..

Your skimmer should have answered that question for you, before it failed. Was it producing? If so, then I would think you would want to continue to use one. It is highly dependent on your goals. SPS - Yes definitely. LPS - Probably. Softies - Maybe. Fish only - not required with good water changes.

sorry dont mean to jack ur thread but how were u going to connect ur backpak to the refugium? im currently trying to figure that out lol

I was trying to attach to refugium but really tight space. As for the question with the skimmer motor broken. Actually it wasn't doing much. I noticed since going to a refugium my waste output on the skimmer decreased.
