about it set up a 40 gallon tank what skimmer would y’all recommend, and yes it will have a sump so not hob

For tank this size, ideal is an IceCap K1-50 or K1-100 which is a hang on unit and works like a full size unit - very quiet and dependable. ($100 on coralvue.com)
 
You have any experience with it?
I ran a curve 5 on a 75 gallon reef a few years back. Never had any issues with it. You’re going to get all kinds of opinions on this subject this is just my two cents. I’m sure there are a few options that would work here. You said this for a 40 breeder so I’m assuming your budget isn’t unlimited and the curve 5 is hard to beat for the $$.
 
I’m planning on running one of these on the 50 gal build I’m about to start on. It’s under $200 and the DC pump can be throttled down if need be.

second this. pretty good skimmer and reasonable.
