Good morning reefing community,
I currently have a Skimz Monzter Mini sn123 protein skimmer that I have had for roughly a year to a year and a half now and ive finally had enough with it not skimming right and being inconsistant. No matter what I do, I can get it to skim the way I want it for about 1-2 weeks and then it screws up all over again. Im looking for something thats quiet and reliable so I was thinking about upgrading to either the Nyos Quantum 120 or the Bubble Magus Curve 5 but I am very unsure and I wanted some other opinions on this. In my protein skimmer compartment I have 8 inches length wise and 8.5 inches width wise to mess with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am a Simplicity guy I have a 240 on my 120 gallon tank, the Curve 5 is a love or hate skimmer. So I would recommend the Simplicity 120 unless of course you have a small tank.

Sorry for the late response, but it is a 39 gallon cube DT.

Between the 2 would vote the BM simply because of number of users. But if i could offer a third option having a nearby reefer come over and check the current skimmer. Most reefers if have the time and you are near would have no issue helping a fellow traveler. And would stop you from buying a new piece of equipment you maybe didn’t need :)

Ive been reading the BM is a great skimmer but at the same time their customer support is horrible. And I never even thought about having another reefer come over to look at the skimmer.

I have no personal experience with these two but the Aquamaxx FC and new Deltecs have seemed to have gotten good reviews.

I agree with Blue Spot Octopus go with Simplicity, I have been running a test with a DC 240 versus a Red Sea RSk 600, Simplicity hands down is the winner (will post results after a few more days of running) Great results with this skimmer and awesome customer support. After 15 months running had an error code (E1) they sent a replacement power supply and controller no charge and had them next day. Red sea has been pulled off and 240Dc is my skimmer from here on.

I went from a octo to a nyos. Night and day difference. I skipped the 120 because I read they were a little under sized. Got a 160 on a 45. with 78 gallon total volume.

Really?? I cant quite get a clear answer on whether the Nyos is worth it with everytjing ive been reading. A lot of what im reading is the 120 isnt as good as the 160. And as for Reef Octopus, there line is really expensive. I was looking at the Essence 130 because it was the only skimmer that fit and it was a pretty penny.

I switched to nyos 2 months ago. Went with the 160 then then torque reactor. I am overly judgmental about everything. I have no complaints on the nyos products. Work beautifully for me.

with the Nyos, do you have the issue of the pump not bubbling after it is shut off?

Zero issues with failure to start.

That video has answered basically everything I wanted to know about that. It is dead silent (has to be because the tank is in my room) and the way the bubbles are spinning as well, plus the on/off issue. just have to swallow the price tag a little lol.

Yeah. Price is a bit of a shocker. I thought the same thing.

I run it 24/7 with 2 10 minute shut off periods for feeding.

Nice needle impeller too. Bubble out put has not degraded at all. I only clean the bunk out of the cup once a week but have a 5 gallon sea chem container it empty’s into.

Thats really good to hear. Looks like I would have to go with the 120 vs the 160 because the 160 wont fit in my sump, only downside is the 120 doesnt have a drain plug on the collection cup.
