Whats everyone's opinion on a custom stand for a rimless tank, stand. Do you think the rimless tank looks better with a stained stand(cherry, walnut, or some sort of dark color). Vs just staining/painting it black? I can't decide what to do with my stand.. The frame is made up of 2x6's for top and bottom, and then the legs and supports are 2 x 4's. I'm gonna skin it in some sort of plywood, just can't decide what to do.

Lacquer finished ones look nice with a gloss finish. But smooth with a nice stand is real nice as well

This is obviously a personal preference thing!

Now let me tell you the right answer. I believe your tank should be the focal point when you enter a room. Accordingly the stand should be demure and not stand out. I’ve gone over to fellow reefers’ houses and the first thing I see is this drop-dead gorgeous stand made of exotic woods and fancy molding…..a masterpiece of woodworking and staining. Accordingly the stand should be unobtrusive, with simple molding and painted a solid color….I’ve become a fan of flat black.

One other point....standard plywood doesn't stain very nicely.

If you have decent wood - cherry, maple SOME oak, stain it. If it is cheaper wood - poplar, pine, cheap oak, plywood, then paint it. Black spraypaint looks very nice on a stand.

Let the wife pick! I did, it looks good and I'm more worried about what's in the tank anyways!
